Brumidi's “The Apotheosis of Washington” shows Washington seated in Heaven with the figure of Liberty on one side, Victory and Fame on the other.

Thirteen maidens, representing the thirteen original states, waft in a circle around him, holding aloft a banner with the words, “e pluribus unum”.

Directly beneath Washington is Armed Liberty trampling tyranny and kingly power; Liberty's face is supposedly that of Brumidi's young wife, Lola Germon.

Around the perimeter are six groups representing war, art and sciences, marine, commerce, mechanics, and agriculture.
